CISA will Dedicate October to Encourage Everyone to be Cyber Smart

WASHINGTON – The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) kicked off Cybersecurity Awareness Month today, following a proclamation by President Biden designating October as a time for the public and private sectors to work together to continue raising awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and equip the public with the resources they need to be safer and more secure online. CISA will be participating in various events, social media engagements and outreach throughout October in partnership with NCSA. This is to encourage everyone to be cyber-smart and to take responsibility for their cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity is about protecting people and keeping them safe,” Jen Easterly, CISA Director said. It’s crucial that everyone takes a moment to use common-sense measures like multi-factor authentication this month in order to stay safe online. We live so much of our lives on digital platforms. It is crucial that everyone does their part to help combat cyberspace threats .”

This month, CISA will focus on “cyber hygiene”, simple and common-sense ways to stay safe online. We urge everyone to implement these four easy things you can do on your devices:

Implement multi-factor authentication on your accounts and make it 99% less likely you’ll get hacked.
Update your software. You can actually turn on automatic updates.
Think before you click. Over 90% of successful cyber attacks start with a phishing email.

Use strong passwords and, ideally, a password manager to create and store unique passwords.
