DELL NEWS: HPC In The Edge… Of The Parking Lot

dWeb.News Article from Daniel Webster dWeb.News

Another claim to fame has been made by the Rattler supercomputer at Dell Technologies Edge Innovation Center. High performance computing (HPC), a result of a partnership with NVIDIA(r), was placed at No. 233 on the latest TOP500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

While this distinction alone is a sign that we are talking about a world-class HPC cluster, the story becomes even more compelling when you consider that a part of the Rattler cluster can be found in a modular data centre in the parking lot at a Dell Technologies building located in Austin, Texas. Rattler is truly HPC at its physical edge.

The Rattler system is intended to demonstrate extreme scalability. It leverages GPUs with NVIDIA NVLink(tm), which offers a faster alternative for multi GPU systems than traditional PCIe-based solutions.1 Rattler also speeds traffic between servers that have an NVIDIA InfiniBand interconnect. This system is used by teams for workload characterization and application-specific benchmarking.

The Dell Technologies HPC & AI Innovation Lab

The Rattler system is one of three powerful HPC clusters that are part of the overarching Dell Technologies HPC & AI Innovation Lab in Austin. This world-renowned lab encompasses a 13,000-square-foot data center devoted to high performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI). It is home to thousands of servers and a variety of storage and network systems.

The HPC & AI Innovation Lab combines cutting-edge infrastructure with HPC operational excellence. It is staffed with computer scientists, engineers, and subject matter specialists who collaborate actively with Dell Technologies customers and the HPC community. This team provides early access to new technologies and integrates and tunes clusters. It also benchmarks applications and develops best practices. They publish their results.

In short, this lab shows you what HPC systems can do — even while they’re out in the garage.
