Today, I am proud to say that the United States was elected for a term of three years to the UN Human Rights Council. I am grateful to all the nations that supported our campaign. I look forward to the United States being a constructive voice to push the UN Human Rights Council to fulfill its mandate and protect the values that we hold dear.
As I stated at the UN General Assembly last week, we are at an important turning point in history. Future generations will be influenced by the choices we make over the next few years. The United States is ready to partner with allies and partners to lead the world towards a more peaceful and prosperous future that respects human dignity. We will all stand together for the rights and well-being of all people, including women, girls, members from LGBTQI+ communities, ethnic and religious minorities, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized members. We will demand accountability from governments that violate human rights. We will continue to support and stand with the activists, human rights advocates, and peaceful protestors at the frontlines of the struggle for freedom and tyranny.
Defending human rights and demonstrating that democracies deliver for their people is a fundamental challenge of our time. This is the core of my administration’s foreign policies and it touches the heart of our nation–and people. This December, I am looking forward to welcoming diverse government, civil society and private sector actors to a virtual Summit for Democracy. It will affirm that democratic governance is the most powerful tool available to us to face the challenges of the 21st century and unlock our human potential.
