October 12, 2021, Solighetto – The Consortium for the Protection of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG announced this week the successful conclusion of harvest 2021. It began in September in the Conegliano region and moved westward towards Valdobbiadene at the end of September. The entire region was closed on October 3.
This is the end of an important year, built on its recent successes. More than 64 million bottles have been certified to date in 2021, and given the reduced yields of 2020, now the region is back to normalizing the production quantities laid out in the regulations.

Meteorological trends in 2021
From a meteorological point of view, 2021 was a cool year compared to the last 15 years; for this reason, the development of the vines and consequently the ripening of the grapes were significantly delayed, about ten to twelve days for each phenological phase.
The cool spring continued through April and May with the rains of May evenly spreading throughout the region. Contrary to previous years, June and July saw less rain. This allowed for fewer diseases to be dealt with in the vineyards. Healthy grapes were produced by the vines which did not suffer from sunburn or dehydration. Good levels of acidity were achieved by the cool start to September and the range of temperatures that August brought. This is crucial for sparkling wines of high quality with a noticeable freshness.
Harvest operations started in the southeast zone on the slopes that are most exposed to sunlight. They then moved towards the northwest in September. Given the characteristics of the terrain, marked by very steep slopes and ups and downs that are difficult for machinery to access, in Conegliano Valdobbiadene 600/700 hours per hectare per year of manual work are required, compared to an average of 150/200 hours per hectare in the flat areas, where mechanization is advanced. The area’s heroic harvest is the culmination of wine-growing talent and is an important factor in its DOCG status.
