Rockaway Memories: Growing up in Rockaway Beach, Long Island, a new book by Joseph Daniel Murphy, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

A national treasure of family life on Rockaway Beach, Long Island in the 1920’s 1930’s through WWII. Joseph Daniel Murphy, a WWII naval commander, has written a captivating story. From a member the “Greatest Generation”, life lessons about family, compassion faith determination and survival.

A deeply personal story of one young man growing up in the early 1920’s and 1930’s in the Belle Harbor section of Rockaway Beach, Long Island. It was a very different life than the bustle and bustle of New York City, which was only thirty miles away. Belle Harbor and Long Island Peninsula were remote locations. Few families owned cars and public transportation was slow and expensive. People didn’t travel far from their Atlantic Ocean playgrounds or small communities. Everyone looked out for each other and cared for one another.

Growing up in Rockaway in the 1920’s-1930’s provides the framework of what helped shape and build the gentlemen and officer Joseph would become. This memoir is self-written and contains essential lessons about family, community and survival in a time of history that tested America’s grit. It also includes the story of America’s “Greatest Generation.” Every American faced an economic problem during the “Great Depression”. The New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped to rebuild America. His ‘Fireside Chats,’ which calmed all Americans’ fears and gave them hope that their lives would be better with new opportunities, was a part of the New Deal. Joe, a Long Island resident and one of three brothers, fondly remembers his childhood in Belle Harbor and the good times he had. This is a story about hope and hardship.

On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a devastating surprise attack from the air and the sea on Pearl Harbor and initiated WWII. Every American was challenged by this event. It would become a time for service and sacrifice with all Americans contributing to the war effort at home and abroad. Joseph D. Murphy, twenty-years old, was one of the youngest commissioned naval officers aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. He served in WWII as the United States Pacific Fleet’s flagship. The USS INTREPID was the flagship of Task Group 38.2 led by Admiral William (Bull) Halsey. This precious memoir tells the story of Joe’s childhood in Rockaway Beach, Long Island from his youth to the end of WWII.
