ST. LOUIS — As many people struggled to adjust to extended work-from home conditions over the past year, their four-legged friends were there for them, as our beloved companions, new colleagues, and a source if happiness in times of uncertainty. Purina’s new research found that 76% pet owners who work from home are happier with their pet. Many pet owners are still unsure about returning to work without their pets. 73% expressed concern about their pets’ reactions to their sudden absence. Employers place employee safety and mental well-being at the forefront of any return-to-office strategies.

Cats in a pet-friendly workplace

Purina, a champion of pet-friendly workplaces and a pet friendly employer for over 20 years, has experienced first-hand the positive effects of welcoming pets into the office. This includes improved mental well-being and employee retention, recruiting and recruitment, as well as increased happiness and productivity. Purina’s study shows that employees and employers are more open to working from home, which has led to a shift in the culture to one where pets are welcomed into the workplace.

72% of pet owners who work from home would prefer a job from a pet-friendly employer to a non-pet friendly one if the salary and other benefits were equal.
48% of pet owners who work from home and have no pet-friendly office believe that office morale would improve if they had a pet-friendly workplace.
Executive leaders are open to the idea. 72% of C-suite managers said that approval of a pet policy would increase socializing in the workplace. 56% stated that it would result in or have resulted in an increase in productivity.
“Now is the right time to think about the role that pets played and will continue to play in the lives and work of employees,” stated Nina Leigh Krueger (CEO and President of Purina). “Introducing pets to the workplace creates a cultural shift which brings people together, provides stress relief, fun, and increases productivity. Employers and employees can now adopt a pet-friendly policy in the workplace. This will allow pets that have been with us through this transition to adjust to a new reality. Purina has the following recommendations for employers and employees who are interested in creating a pet-friendly workplace.
