Shane Doan will be the general manager of Team Canada’s men’s hockey at the Beijing Olympics, Hockey Canada announced Friday. Claude Julien was appointed as the head coach.

Scott Salmond is the assistant general manager, while Blair Mackassey takes over as director of player personnel. Nolan Baumgartner and Jeremy Colliton will join Julien behind the bench.

Doan, and Julien, were both involved in the recent Channel One Cup, which was held in Russia and the Czech Republic. Canada finished third behind Russia and Finland, earning bronze medals. Doan also served as an assistant general manager for Canada during the 2021 IIHF World Championship last summer in Latvia.

As a player, Doan is a two-time IIHF World Champion and represented Canada during the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. Doan is currently the chief hockey development officer of the Arizona Coyotes, the franchise he spent his entire 21-year career with.

Julien’s last full-time NHL coaching gig was with the Montreal Canadiens, losing his job 18 games into the 2020-21 season. He won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins during the 2010-11 season and won a gold medal as an assistant coach for Canada’s men’s hockey team at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Julien also served as an assistant coach for Canada’s win at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016.

Canada will look to improve on its bronze medal performance from the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The competition will not feature NHL players, as it was in Beijing. Canada will play its first game against Germany on Feb. 10.
