France, Italy and Spain had the highest numbers of coronavirus-related cases on Saturday.

French health authorities say they confirmed 104,611 new cases on Saturday. The daily tally hit a record high for the third consecutive day and topped the 100,000 mark for the first time.

Italy reported 54,762 new cases, also renewing the country’s record for three days in a row.

The rapid spread of Omicron variants is believed to have accelerated the surges.

Italian officials imposed a nationwide mandate for outdoor face masks starting Friday. Concerts and large events have been cancelled.

The French government intends to pass a law that requires a certificate for vaccination when people visit restaurants or other public places.
