A potential fundraising shortfall could put social services at risk

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — With three days until Christmas, The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign is calling on the generous American public to ensure funds are available for those in need of assistance. Additional support is needed to close the gap and ensure services continue into 2022.

The largest and longest-running fundraiser of its kind, The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign helps provide year-round support to 30 million Americans. This year, the organization projects it needs to raise $175 million to keep families in their homes–almost 50% more than raised through Red Kettles in 2020.

But this year’s fundraising season has been difficult due to decreased foot traffic to the physical kettles. Recent reports show shopper traffic on the Saturday before Christmas was 26.3% behind pre-pandemic levels.

In addition to rising inflation and worries about new variants, potential supporters have had a harder time giving through monetary donations and volunteering.

People are less likely to volunteer. This has led to some local units seeing a slight decrease in bellringers and people who would otherwise donate not having the resources to do so,” stated Commissioner Hodder.

The need for and demand for services has not diminished. Millions of Americans are facing food insecurity and housing instability, as well as the reemergence and impact of the opioid epidemic. They also have to recover from natural disasters that left them devastated. Since the beginning of the pandemic, The Salvation Army has worked nonstop to provide more than 278 million meals and over $200 million in utility, rent, and mortgage assistance. It has been there on the ground helping survivors and first responders in the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes that decimated the Midwest and South.

Our job is not done,” Hodder said. Hodder said, “Our job is far from over.” “
