Singapore, Nov 25, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) hosted its annual Satellite Industry Forum on Thursday, 18 November as a virtual conference, to end off the Asia Video Summit umbrella of events this year. The Forum opened with a discussion on Satellite Trends and Forecasts Post Covid with Caleb Henry (Senior Analyst at Quilty Analytics). Traditional satcom continues to experience rapid changes and is still in turmoil. The industry is currently dominated only by a few major players. However, this could change drastically over the next five year as new technologies and standards change the competitive landscape. And despite the impact of Covid, there has been no let-up of interest in investment into the space industry with $5.5BN in collective proceeds from all 13 space SPACs.
AVIA had the honor of hosting Stephen Spengler, who was giving his final keynote before he leaves Intelsat as CEO. Spengler had spoken at the Satellite Industry Forum for his first keynote as CEO in 2015, hence it was fitting the Forum was his final address as well.
While the industry continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible, it has yet to reach its full potential in fulfilling its essential role in the global telecommunications landscape. With digital video making up 70% of internet traffic, satellite remains the essential and enabling technology, with the ubiquity, reach and economics to serve the networks.
Spengler’s outlook on industry trends for Asia remains positive, with linear and pay TV distribution still a driving application for the Asia Pacific region, with a growth rate of 2.5% per year. Spengler expressed excitement about 5G as a game-changer and enabler. It will allow solutions and services to be more seamless, interconnected and economical, with satellite integrated into 5G’s world.
Wrapping up his keynote address, Spengler shared Intelsat’s mission to unify the global telecoms ecosystem of the future. This vision calls for all terrestrial and satellite technologies, providers and networks, as well as solutions and services, to be united into one global ecosystem. Spengler stated, “If we concentrate on our customers, those who benefit from a better connected world, that’s success for the next one year and beyond.”
Asia Pacific’s leading satellite operators also shared similar positive sentiments despite the move from broadcast to streaming. Yau Chyong Lim (CEO MEASAT) believes that satellite will continue to be the primary platform for video services in Malaysia. However, it is the platforms who are changing their services to include streaming. Broadcast and streaming will complement one another, with streaming and linear still playing a part, but streaming and streaming being complemented each other. Similar in Australia, despite a plethora of streaming services available, Nick Leake, Head of Satellite and Space Systems, Optus, still sees the same requirements for satellite to go out for at least another 10 years. Roger Tong (CEO, AsiaSat), stated that the greatest problem for Asia Pacific is scale. This is necessary to ensure reliable networks and customers. Tong believes it is crucial to create more partnerships among competing satellite operators in order to move forward, particularly given the regulatory restrictions that restrict consolidation.
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman, Bharti Enterprises and Executive Chairman, OneWeb, also joined the Forum this year for a keynote conversation on the space business in India. It has been able to achieve the holy grail of low latency and high speed, as well as sufficient capacity, through NGSOs. This makes it a solution that will work in the new world and beyond. Mittal also views 5G as a revolutionary technology, thanks to its low latency and boom in industry applications. Mittal noted, however, that while NGSOs have an important role in the 5G ecosystem it will be only at the fringe of 5G ambitions. Mittal shared OneWeb’s vision of connecting all parts of the globe, from oceans and aviation. Mittal stated that “in five years there should be no one in the world who isn’t connected.”
