TOKYO: The Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan OKADA Takashi met with Taliban leaders in Kabul in November. This was according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

The ministry reports that Okada made observations on the situation in the country during Okada’s visit, which lasted from Nov. 21 through 24.. Security measures were taken for the envoy Japanese.

Ambassador Okada met top Taliban officials, including Mullah Abdul Gani Baradar. He urged them all to ensure the safety and well-being of Japanese nationals as well as local staff.

The ministry stated that Okada also requested them to provide safe and quick passage for anyone wishing to leave the country. Okada also stated that Japan would provide assistance to Afghanistan through international organizations in order to address the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation.

According to reports, the Taliban side claimed they would guarantee humanitarian access and safety for aid workers.

The Japanese ambassador stressed that it was important to respect the rights of all Afghans, including children and women, build an inclusive political system and prevent Afghanistan becoming a refuge for terrorists. He stressed that the Taliban would be expected to take positive actions on this.

Okada also met with former President Hamid Karzai.

According to the ministry, Japan will continue to hold working-level talks with officials and contribute to stabilization in Afghanistan.
