Brain scans can reveal certain markers of brain injury, known as white matter hyperintensities. New research has shown that brain scans from contact athletes over their lifetimes, compared with changes at autopsy, revealed that white matter hyperintensities are associated with neuropathological modifications. The study is published in Neurology(r)’s November online edition. Researchers also discovered that white matter hyperintensities in contact athletes were more prevalent during longer careers or with more head impacts.
