The launch, STP-27AD2, was conducted from Astra’s Kodiak Spaceport, located at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska.
Astra’s launch system successfully demonstrated the orbital placement of a test payload to an inclination of 86.0 degrees at an altitude of 500 km. The orbital velocity for the payload was 7. 61 kilometers per second in 8 minutes and 47 seconds. Chris Kemp, founder, chairman and CEO of Astra, said that reaching orbit was a significant milestone for Astra. “We now have the ability to focus on our customers and scaling up rocket production and launch times.” The United States Space Force contracted this mission through a Defense Innovation Unit Other Transaction Agreement.
Astra was founded in 2016 to launch a new generation of space services enabled by large constellations of small satellites in Low Earth Orbit. In order to offer daily space access, the team designed a rocket that could easily be mass-produced like an automobile. Astra “learned its” way to orbit in five years. Each launch increased capabilities and operational efficiency with every iteration.
“We owe our success to our amazing team and the culture that we’ve created at Astra.” Adam London, Co-Founder of Astra and CTO. Adam London, Co-Founder and CTO of Astra, said, “I’m humbled” by their courage and dedication to continue building, launching and learning until they succeed.
Astra’s mission is to make Earth a better place by connecting it to the rest of the world. Astra is the only operational orbital launch provider that charges a fraction of what it costs to launch a dedicated orbital launch service. Astra completed its first commercial orbital launch in November 2021, making it one of the fastest U.S. company in history to reach this milestone. Astra is based in Alameda, California, and was founded in 2016. Astra (NASDAQ : ASTR) is the first publicly traded space launch company on Nasdaq. Visit www.astra.com to learn more about Astra.
