GAMES: The Light In The Darkness – An Educational Historical Experience About The Holocaust In France

dWeb.News Article from Daniel Webster dWeb.News

There has never been a shortage of World War II video games. They rarely mention the Holocaust, one of the greatest tragedies of that time. Recently, a study in the UK found that 52% of UK residents do not know how many Jews died in the Holocaust. Video games are the most popular form of storytelling, and if we want to preserve the memory of those who were killed in the Holocaust, then we need to tell their stories through video gaming. This is what I plan to do with The Light in the Darkness: an educational video game about the Holocaust. It is a project I have been trying to make for the past decade, and now after many trials and tribulations, it will finally launch on Xbox and Windows 10 next year and will be available to everyone as a free-to-play title.

For The Light in the Darkness, I wanted to focus on the Holocaust in France for multiple reasons. First, because I’m French, the Holocaust in France is not often discussed. It resonates with me because I was a boy and my grandmother used to tell me stories about her caring for Kindertransport children in the UK. My family was shaped by the Holocaust.

Many people have asked how the gameplay mechanics will work, since video games are generally based on the choices the player makes. To simulate the feeling of being powerless during the Holocaust, the game won’t use choice-based mechanics. The game’s focus is on the story and the experience of seeing these difficult times through the eyes and memories of the families. This allows them to empathize with the victims and shows the kindness and heroism of others.

The game follows Moses, Bluma and their son Samuel, who are Polish Jewish immigrants who came to France for a better life. The player will be able to experience the events that took place before Nazi Germany invaded France and the atrocities committed by Vichy France, also known as the Vel D’Hiv Roundup. Multiple Holocaust survivors inspired the story. However, to ensure that everything is historically accurate, historians and multiple Holocaust survivors have been consulted. The Light in the Darkness will be a storytelling platform that offers a captivating story and an educational component. The Educational Mode will allow players to explore historical documents and photos as well as access archives. You can watch survivor testimony alongside videos from historians. Education Mode aims to make Holocaust education available to all, even those who can’t visit museums. We need to find new ways to educate people and raise awareness about hate and history. I believe that video games are the best medium for this. That is why I couldn’t be prouder to bring this historical educational experience to Xbox and Windows 10 next year.
