France came into Tuesday night’s match away at Finland in the knowledge that their place at the 2022 World Cup was already secured, but they nevertheless secured a 2-0 victory in Helsinki.

Second-half substitute Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 66th minute, and 10 minutes later Kylian Mbappe doubled Les Bleus‘ advantage to put the game beyond the Finns’ reach.

Didier Deschamps half rotated his France side, with Hugo Lloris, Jules Kounde, Dayot Upamecano, Adrien Rabiot, Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe keeping their place in the team after the 8-0 win against Kazakhstan a few days before.

Yet, it took Benzema coming off the bench in the 56th minute for France to offer more of an attacking threat. The Real Madrid No.9 came in from the left wing and played a one-two with Mbappe, who backheeled the ball into the path of Benzema, who saw his shot deflected past Lukas Hradecky.

Mbappe displayed a similar level of confidence with his own goal. Having picked up the goal on the left wing, five yards or so inside Finland‘s half, he then displayed his rapid speed before firing a curled effort into the far corner to double France‘s lead and put the game beyond doubt.

France came into this game knowing that they had their place in Qatar assured, but Real Madrid fans will surely be salivating about the prospect of seeing the Benzema-Mbappe partnership on a weekly basis next season.
