ARAB NEWS: ROME: The Italian Republic has awarded a knighthood to a Kuwaiti professor in anthropology and archeology.

Carlo Baldocci, the Italian Ambassador to Kuwait, awarded Prof. Hassan Ashkanani the Order of the Star of Italy for his efforts in strengthening intellectual, cultural and academic relations between the two friendly countries.”. This is Italy’s second highest civilian honor. It’s given to foreigners and Italians who have shown exceptional merit in promoting friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and other countries. Baldocci, a host of intellectuals and academics attended a ceremony at Italy’s Embassy. He praised Ashkanani for his efforts in organizing the first winter school on archeology at the Social Sciences College next Jan . This school is unique in a Gulf Cooperation Council state. According to the Italian envoy, lectures and field trips with students in anthropology were part of the Kuwaiti academic’s activities. He also visited Kuwaiti museums. His efforts helped foster cross-cultural interaction. Ashkanani, a lecturer at Kuwait University, expressed gratitude for the honor and said: “I’m an officer for my country to serve it’s history, culture, heritage This professor is a well-known collector of ancient books from italien travellers who traveled in the Arabian Peninsula. He focuses primarily on Kuwait. The oldest Italian traveler to Kuwait from Italy, Marco Mosizzano (a surgeon in the Italian royal House and a member the mission of King Emmanuel 2), is his most precious book. During Mosizzano’s visit to 1862,, he described the king’s wish to purchase Arabian horses for Italy’s wars. Italy bought many horses from Youssef Al Badr, a Kuwaiti merchant. The book also includes King Emmanuel’s meeting with Sheikh Sabah bin Abdullah Al-Sabah Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti ruler. Ashkanani, in addition to his duties as assistant professor, is also the curator at Kuwait University’s Anthropology and Archeology Museum and runs the laboratory at the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology. His research interests include the nature of sociopolitical entities and social complexity. He also studies trade between 7,000 and 4,000 decades ago.
