The second European Service Module has been prepared and shipped to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA, this week from Airbus facilities in Bremen. ESM-2, which is made up components from 10 European countries, will power the Artemis II crewed mission to the Moon.

The European Service Modules are a key element of the Orion spacecraft, the first to return humans to the Moon since the 1970s.

Built by the brightest minds in Europe, the module provides propulsion, power and thermal control and will supply astronauts with water and oxygen. The Crew Module Adapter and Crew Module have the ESM installed beneath them. Together they make up the Orion spacecraft.

ESM-2 currently en route to Florida aboard an Antonov An -124 cargo plane, where NASA is finishing preparations for Artemis I’s launch. Since long, the first European Service Module and the crew module have been mated to make the first Orion spacecraft that can launch to the Moon. It will be installed on the Space Launch System rocket during final preparations for Artemis I. The module will then be tested when it powers an uncrewed maiden flight on Orion’s orbit, which will take it as far as 64 km behind and around the Moon.

ESA will deliver up to six modules for NASA. Three more are currently in negotiation. These Artemis missions will allow for assembly and service of the lunar Gateway.

Airbus was the prime contractor of ESA for building the six first service modules. The integration phase of the third European Service Module (or European Service Module) is underway. This will see the addition of brackets, equipment and harness to the structure.
