Marking the “International Day for Failure” on October 13, experts and officials from related fields will join together to discuss failure and rechallenge.

On this occasion, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS, Minister Jeon Hae-cheol) and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS, Minister Kwon Chil-seung) announced that the two ministries will co-host the “World Rechallenge Forum” on October 13 (Wed). This forum will be a platform for sharing the major achievements of Fail Expo, which has been going on for four years. It will also shed light on cultures that encourage people to fail again and to try again.

Originally launched by Aalto Entrepreneurship Society, a group from Aalto University in 2010,, the “Day for Failure”, was extended to 2012 and included participation from various countries including Canada, the UK, Germany, and Canada.

This year’s World Rechallenge Forum will deliver a discourse on the failures of individuals, businesses, and countries deeply affected by COVID-19 and prepare for the shift to “living with COVID-19. “

This forum will feature experts and officials in related fields who will share inspiring stories about people who have failed and then succeeded. They hope to encourage acceptance of failure and foster a culture of learning from it.

The forum’s first section will be opened by Minister Jeon Haecheol from MOIS.

Next, distinguished speakers will make remarks, including a welcome speech from Minister Kwon Chil–seung, MSS, and a keynote speech delivered by Kwon Seon–pil, Head of Fail Expo Private Plan Office.

The Fail Expo has been switched to being open all year. Kwon Seon-pil, Head of Fail Expo Private Planning Office, will deliver the keynote speech. The keynote speech will focus on the Fail Expo’s role in raising public awareness about failure. It will also propose a way to enhance the Fail Expo to support the public to recover from setbacks and set themselves on a new path to success, especially in this era with COVID-19.

Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi (Secretary-General of United Cities and Local Government Asia-Pacific) and Mona Ismail (who represents AaltoES and organises the International Day for Failure) will be joining the discussion either in-person or online.

This will allow for talks on a variety of topics such as the role and potential of the public and private sectors, and how to foster global engagement that promotes acceptance and embrace of failure in society. The forum’s second section features panel discussions that focus on the experiences of individuals and companies from both the private and public sectors.

The forum will feature the following speakers: Ahn Young-no (a member of Fail Expo Private Planning Office) will share stories about the operation and management of Fail Expo. Mona Ismail, President, of AaltoES will discuss the International Day for Failure. Marc H. Meyer, Professor, Northeastern University Center for Entrepreneurship Education will address enterprise cases.

Mona Ismail, in particular, will stress the importance of raising public awareness about failure. She will also discuss how society can accept failure and how to change its mindset.

This second part of the panel discussion will feature inspirational talks from Manoj Fernando, Founder & CEO of Thinktomi and Yoon Nan-sil, President Secretary for Institution Reform, as well as Professor & Director Seo Yongseok, KAIST Future Strategy Research Center.

Meanwhile, this forum will be broadcast live from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on October 13 via the YouTube channels of MOIS and the Fail Expo.

Video clips will be available in Korean on the Youtube channel of MOIS (https://bit.ly/38253ZH) while in English on the Fail Expo’s channel (https://bit.ly/3BCLV5X).

Minister Kwon Chil-seung of MSS said, “Amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, Korea demonstrated its true capability to overcome the crisis and was able to revisit the meaning of failure and rechallenge in a genuine sense.” He said, “We will continue removing obstacles so failure cannot keep people down. We will also not shy away from trying again.” The government will use its policy resources to ensure that failure experiences are socially beneficial. “

MOIS Minister Jeon Haecheol noted that “The Fail Expo was launched in 2018, and has helped to raise awareness about failure and promote the positive qualities of it. We hope that this year’s World Rechallenge Forum with world-renowned scholars will provide a unique setting for sharing valuable experiences and wisdom. “

Minister Jeon added, “Through various measures in place, such as the Fail Expo, we will provide full support for helping people go back to normal life disrupted by COVID-19 and taking courage to try again. “
