The United States is providing more than $26 million in additional assistance to respond to the humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia. Since the beginning of the crisis, nearly $663 millions in humanitarian aid has been provided by the United States.

This assistance from the American people will enable our international humanitarian partners to help many of the estimated 6-7 million people in need in northern Ethiopia, including some of the 900,000 who are facing famine-like conditions, and over 48,000 refugees who have fled from northern Ethiopia to Sudan. This assistance will provide essential health care, shelter, food, water, sanitation and hygiene services. Our partners will benefit from this funding to reestablish contact with family members that have been separated by conflict. U.S. Agency for International Development’s Disaster Assistance Response Team is still available to support U.S. humanitarian response efforts.

We remain concerned by the worsening humanitarian situation in northern Ethiopia. It is vital that humanitarian workers and organizations have immediate, unhindered, safe access to the affected areas in order to render timely and need-based aid and save lives.

The humanitarian situation will only get worse without a political solution. It is crucial that all sides cease hostilities and stop violence. It is essential that there are credible investigations into atrocities and human right abuses, and accountability for those responsible. The United States and other international communities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the Government of Ethiopia fulfills its public commitments to allow independent domestic and international investigations into the abuses and holds those responsible accountable.

We welcome other donors’ contributions to this crisis response. We urge all others to support the humanitarian needs that have been created by the crisis of northern Ethiopia.
