LOS ANGELES — Walker Buehler wants Game 4 in the National League Division Series. When he approached Dave Roberts, the manager of the club’s right-hander, and the coaching staff about the idea, he made it clear.

The Dodgers lost Game 3 to fall behind 2 games to 1 in the best-of-5 series against the Giants. Roberts said that Buehler was “no-brainer” and would start Game 4. As long as Buehler felt well on Tuesday morning. He did and he was up to the challenge.

Buehler pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run baseball with four strikeouts during the Dodgers’ 7-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. This victory forced the play of Game 5, which will take place at Oracle Park on Thursday.

Buehler stated, “To be honest, there probably wasn’t anything that could’ve been going on that would have made me tell [Roberts] that the ball was mine.” “So long as I could get into the clubhouse, I believe I was going pitch.”

Buehler started the game on three days rest, his first assignment since Friday’s Game 1. His perfect first inning set the tone. His fastball velocity was 97.5 miles per hour. Buehler was able to work around traffic in the second, fourth and fifth innings but kept the Giants off balance and off the scoreboard. Buehler was able to get seven whiffs out of his 71 pitches. He also got two on his changeup which he relied more than usual.

Will Smith, catcher, said that [the changeup has] has just improved and become better over the course of the year. He can throw it for strikes when he needs. It’s possible to keep it down, so he can chase it. He was getting a good feeling for it tonight so we continued to lean on it and he was doing a great job with it.”

After allowing a single in the fifth inning and issuing an out-of-control walk in the sixth, Buehler gave way to Joe Kelly in right-hander position. This left the Dodgers with a 4-0 lead. Kelly allowed a single to load bases. Buehler charged a run on Darin Ruf’s groundout to second. But Kelly got Brandon Crawford to ground out, ending Buehler’s threat and closing the book.

Roberts said, “Honestly, I want [Buehler] to have better stuff than he did last night [in Game 1],”,” and then joked that Roberts should “have him go on shorter [rest] more often.”

Buehler is now in his fourth Major League season and has earned a reputation as a great big-game pitcher. The numbers prove it. Buehler allowed three earned runs in 21 1/3 innings (1. 25 EA, with 24 Strikeouts and five Walks. His 2. His 50 ERA for 13 postseason start ranks third among all pitchers with at minimum 10 starts, after Madison Bumgarner (2.2. 11) Curt Schilling (2. 12).

Blake Treinen, a reliever, said that Walker is “one of the greatest playoff pitchers I have ever seen” He loves every moment. This is his chance to shine. It was his best year yet. He was our stopper, with his back against the wall. We have many strong arms, but this says a lot about his ability to handle the ball in such a situation.

Roberts was armed with a well-rested bullpen and had plenty to work with after Buehler’s 4 1/3 innings. After Kelly had completed the fifth inning Kelly was out, Treinen, Alex Vesia and Phil Bickford joined forces to complete the four final frames. It should be all hands behind Julio Urias who will pitch on normal rest Wednesday, with Game 5 being an off-day Wednesday.

Buehler’s return to a prominent spot is the main reason that Game 5 is taking place.

Mookie Betts, right fielder, said that Walker Buehler is someone she can trust when we are at our worst. He did it again today.”
