The 30 year mark in 2022, is the first Mortal Kombat video, but series creator Ed Boon points to 2021 as 30 years that John Tobias and he began creating it. Boon took to Twitter to share a fascinating behind the scenes clip of how Scorpion’s legendary spear move was made.
Mortal Kombat) will be 30 year old in 2022. 2021 is 30 year since we started working on the game. It seemed like a great idea to share behind-the scenes stuff in celebration. This video shows Scorpion’s famous (GET OVER HERE!) The spear move. (1 of 9) pic.twitter.com/3f1tdvjG9R

Boon’s Twitter thread, which you can view in the link above, breaks down everything behind the over two-minute clip. As Tobias and Boon instruct Daniel Pesina on how Scorpion should move and position themselves, we see him rehearse the motions for the spear toss and subsequent yank. Boon says that while they did a lot of preparation for the video shoots, some ideas came along during filming. “With Scorpion’s spear, it began with “You know what would make a cool ass movement ?” He continues, explaining that one of those details was the speed at which Scorpion threw his spear. This was important to catch opponents off guard. The animation had to be simple and contained only a few frames. The spear should be able to pass over a ducking opponent so it was kept at chest height
. Mortal Kombat fans will appreciate Boon’s nine-tweet thread. Boon explains the tricks and challenges involved in capturing animation frames with limited memory. It’s quite amazing to be, Boon says, a “fly” on the wall for the creation the series’ most iconic move.
As for Mortal Kombat’s 30th birthday, there’s no telling what Netherrealm could have in store. Mortal Kombat 11 effectively concluded with the release of the Aftermath expansion and the final batch of DLC fighters. It seems early for the reveal of MK 12, so does that open the door for another game announcement? It should be an exciting year to keep your eyes on Netherrealm, given Ed Boon’s sneakiness.
