The world’s top-ranked tennis player has fallen.
Shelby Rogers defeated No. 1 Ashleigh Barty was defeated by No. 2 Shelby Rogers in the third round at the US Open Saturday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was a thrilling tiebreak of 6-2, 1-6 and 7-6 (7-5).
Rogers now stands as the last American woman at the Grand Slam.
Sports: Shelby Rogers upsets Ash Barty
Rogers came out hot after dropping the initial game, winning the next three to take a quick lead on Saturday night. Although Barty won 5 games, Rogers took control of the next 3 to win it.
Barty showed the world why she has been ranked so high in the second set.
Barty won five consecutive games after splitting the first two sets with Rogers. This set forced Barty into a third set, where she took a 5-2 lead and looked poised to advance to the fourth round.
Rogers won four straight games to stun Barty. She then won a tiebreaker on a pair Barty forced errors. The match lasted just over two hours.
